India is known as a land of festivals and celebrations. The festival of navratri continues for ten days and Dussehra is on the tenth day. Many of the Hindu festivals are related to great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata and Dussehra is one of the main ones and there is a big story behind it.  In fact it is believed that Ram and Ravana went on fighting during these 10 days and Ravana was killed by  Ram on the tenth day.

Second story is that Dussehra is also called Vijayadashami and is celebrated as victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahisasura. The festival of Dussehra falls in the month of September or October of the English calendar. In fact, the main message is to give that no matter what happens good will always win.

Dussehra or Vijaya Dashami is an important Hindu festival. It is celebrated by Indians every year in the Hindu Vikrami Calender month of Ashwin (September / October).

This is also the festival marking end of Navratri and the Durga idols which are worshipped for nine days prior to Dussehra are immersed. Dussehra is also the day when many families start formal education of their kids because it marks the significanceof education. The practise has been so old, that in some parts of Kerala, even after conversions to Christianity, some members of the community continued this tradition. It is very old and people feel that it is really good to do so and it marks a good begining of their education.

Local customs differs regionally, every area has its own way of celebrating this festival but Rama's victory is always the importance of the celebrations. On this day, the statues of Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Meghanad are burnt; which are stuffed with crackers. In burning these statues the people believe that all the bad deeds are dead and they are asked to do only good.children, specially enjoy seeing this because of the beautiful fireworks on the ground. The festival which is thought as the "Victory of Good over Evil" & "Return of God from Exile" iscelebrated with great enthusiasm around the country.

In Himachal Pradesh, it is famous as "Kullu Dussehra", a week long fair is arranged in the hill town of Kullu, From the little temples in the hills, deities are brought in procession to the 'maidan' in Kullu, to pay homage to the reigning deity, Raghunathji.

In Southern India - Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, families arrange dolls (Bommai Kolu) on artificially constructed steps and an elaborated spread of lamps and flowers are prepared. Women generally exchange gifts of coconuts, clothes and sweets. They sing songs, tell stories that the dolls might depict and eat a dish made out of chickpeas (choondal). The whole set up is put up on the very first day of Navaratri and last till the nine days. After the Saraswati pooja on the ninth day, the whole set up is taken down on Vijayadashmi. Vijayadashami is an auspicious occasion for children to commence their education in classical dance and music, and to pay homage to their teachers.

In Western India, especially in Gujarat, the evenings and nights are celebrated with Garba dance. The women dance around an earthen lamp while singing devotional songs with hands gestues and use of dandiyas.

In northern India,stage shows are prepared which shows the life of Ram specially these events where Ravan kidnapped Ram's wife Sita and afterwards the statues are burnt.
In Bengal, the festival is celebrated as Kali Puja or Durga Puja .The festival of durga puja last for ten days, of which nine nights are spent in worship, 'Navaratri'. The tenth day is devoted to the worship of goddess Durga.Beautiful idols are worshipped and then on the last day or at the day of Dusshera the idols are immersed in lake or pond.
